Rep. Trey Gowdy intends his Republican colleagues to hand special counsel Robert Mueller an opportunity as he reportedly is getting close to imprisoning people in his investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Gowdy stated on “Fox News Sunday” Mueller is famous as a non-political individual in Washington and has devotedly served the nation as both the director of the FBI and a U.S. lawyer. He intended Republicans to have that in mind as the probe escalates.
“I would encourage my Republican friends, give the guy a chance to do his job. The result will be known by the facts covered by what he uncovers,” he stated. “The personalities involved are much less important to me than the underlying facts. I would say give the guy a chance to do his job.”
Gowdy stated he doesn’t anticipate the charges, allegedly set to come on Monday, to be opposing a small participant in the probe.
“It’s really important what the charge is, it’s really important who the person being charged is,” he stated. “One thing I don’t get that excited about, although I do see a lot of reporting, somehow or another you will be able to flip a witness and that witness is going to turn state’s evidence on everyone else. If you didn’t believe a witness yesterday, chances are great you are not going to believe that witness tomorrow.”
No matter his support for Mueller, Gowdy continued to say he is disappointed there seems to be leaks deriving from Mueller’s base.
“I will say this, the only conversation I’ve had with Robert Mueller was stressing to him the importance of cutting out the leaks with respect to serious investigations,” he stated. “It is kind of ironic that the people charged with investigating the law and executing the law would violate the law and, make no mistake, disclosing grand jury material is a violation of the law.”
